Where Does Brazilian Hair Come From?

Today, Brazilian hair is one of the most popular hair extension types available. But where does Brazilian hair come from?

Human hair is a multi-billion dollar industry that has ancient origins in many different cultures.

"In the 1800's, peasant women in France were lured into being shorn like sheep to make wigs. In the early 1900's, it was reported that hair sold in the states was coming from sewers and corpses in China. Hair dealers were thought to be shady." , according to a Refinery29 report.

"Most people do not know where their hair comes from, and I don't think they care." says Riquia Hailes, founder of a Just Extensions salon in Los Angeles.

The hair extensions market sources hair from some reliable and trustworthy sources, but there is also a huge risk of shady, poor quality, chemically processed hair suppliers which have flooded this multi-billion dollar market.

The hair bundles industry has devolved into a fierce competition between suppliers trying to outdo their competitors in quality and authenticity.

Why Do Hair Extensions Have Exotic Names?

The terms Brazilian hair, Malaysian hair, Peruvian hair, Russian Hair, Cambodian Hair etc., evoke images of exotic looks, textures and curl patterns often associated with women of those ethnicities.

Some names were created out of thin air in order to stand out in an increasingly diverse and worldwide hair extensions market.

These hair origins sound exotic and are often just fancy descriptors for hair textures that resemble the stereotypical hair quality of women from various tropical areas. (i.e.- Brazil)

Most of these countries do not have a thriving hair donor industry. Due to the poverty that often exists in these areas, there is a minimal chance that women will be fairly compensated for their virgin hair.

Virgin Remy Hair is unprocessed, hair from a single donor with all cuticles intact and flowing in the same direction. It's the most sought after hair, but is rarely found in todays market.

However, one place does have a multi-million dollar hair extensions industry; India... Specifically Hindu Temples of India where millions of women donate their hair as part of their ritual show of devotion and faith.

"This level of high quality hair isn't something you can fake.", says Refinery29's beauty editor.

So, Where Does Brazilian Hair Come From?

Brazilian hair is not sourced from Brazil.  It is most often sourced from either India or other manufacturing giants of the world, like China and certain countries in Asia.

The names, Brazilian, Malaysian, Peruvian Hair etc., is most likely hair that is merely branded to satisfy consumer demand for a certain curl pattern, texture, durability, softness, luster and/or heat resistance.

"Brazilian hair" is characterized by a soft feel, medium luster and thickness with a natural durability that holds well under various temperatures and conditions. It is also a deep natural black color that approximates what is known as color (1B).

Regardless of where hair is sourced from or how it is processed, the fact remains that human hair textures do vary naturally and have unique qualities that are based on human genetics.

where is brazilian hair from

Some virgin hair donors have hair that is naturally coarse or thick. Some hair is naturally thin, silky or shiny. Those traits, combined with unique processing techniques such as washing, conditioning and steam processing, keep the virgin hair intact and of high quality.

The hair extension industry is not regulated by any governing body, so the hair on the market today will often make claims that can't be easily verified. Hair grading systems (Grade 8A) and claims of Virgin Remy hair without any verification have put a grey cloud over the authenticity of the entire market.

So Should I Buy Brazilian Hair?

There are many quality hair vendors whose products claim to be free from chemicals, dyes and synthetic fibers and they have hundreds of satisfied customers to vouch for their claims.

You often get what you pay for in this industry so don't be afraid to invest in good hair extensions regardless of the brand name or claimed origin.

How To Bring Your Bundles Back To Life

Revive Your Human Hair Extensions

Virgin human hair is an investment, especially if you buy high quality. Like any investment, you have to take care of it for it to be healthy, shiny, and gorgeous. Over time, you might notice your hair becoming dry and dull.

Here are four easy steps to bring even the most damaged of hair weaves back to their original shine, feel, and healthy look!

Detangle Your Bundles

One of the points of getting a weave is to extend your hair length, and longer hair is prone to tangling. Everyday things like wind, sleeping, and even just being out and about can cause tangles.

Any weave can be detangled with a little patience and a wide-toothed comb. You use a wide-toothed comb because it is less prone to breaking your hair than a regular brush would be.

You should start the detangling process by combing out the ends and slowly working your way up the strands. If you come across any knots, slowly and gently loosen the knot with your fingers before you try to run the comb through it.

Deep Conditioning

After you are sure you got all the tangles out of your weave, you can move onto the second part, deep conditioning. This is the most crucial step to bringing your weave back to life. Deep conditioning moisturizes your hair by opening up each cuticle and allowing moisture to penetrate deep through every strand.

End by saturating every strand and then continue to distribute it with your wide-toothed comb.

Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse

An ACV Rinse will restore the pH balances to your hair. If you have unbalanced pH levels, your weave goes from gorgeous to a mess very quickly. The reason your weave is so sleek and shiny when you first get it is because the cuticle is still fully sealed.

However, the more you use any products, shampoo, and dry shampoo your hair, or use tools like straightening irons or curling irons, you fry your hair. The cuticle that gave your weave such a healthy and shiny look strips away and you're left with dry, frizzy, unhealthy hair.

You can help revive it with a natural product, however. You use Apple Cider Vinegar because it is the least damaging option to bring your weave back to its original glory. When you're ready, mix three parts water with one part Apple Cider Vinegar. Next, thoroughly saturate your hair and leave it in for an hour then rinse. Deep condition again.

Give Your Hair Extensions a Bleach Bath

A bleach bath is a surefire way to make your weave look and feel like new again! This step should be done only if all else fails and as a last resort. This step requires using chemicals so make sure your hands are properly protected with latex gloves.

Your weave can be a gorgeous extension to enhance your natural beauty. It requires a little TLC and proper care to make it as beautiful as possible.

How To Find The Best Weft Sealer For Your Virgin Hair

Sealing hair wefts should be one of the first things that you do once purchasing your new hair bundles. Choosing a weft sealer shouldn’t be a difficult task but it has become more and more complicated because there are so many different types of products that can be used to seal wefts. Some weft sealers are specifically designed for sealing virgin hair wefts while others are designed for bonding other materials such as fabrics or cloth.

Here is our list of products and hair weft sealers that you might want to try on your next bundles. Ultimately, deciding on the best weft sealer for you, may be a matter of trial , error and personal preference. Hopefully this list will give you a starting point.

Aleene’s Fabric Fusion

Aleene’s fabric Fusion is designed to adhere fabrics together but works fairly well and is commonly used as a weft sealant. It has a gel like consistency that doesn’t make the hair weft stiff as a board. It also dries fast and doesn’t lose any strength after it gets wet. The gel like consistency may not always seep into the hair weft very well and may require some dabbing in order to penetrate the wefts and seal them. Fabric fusion dries clear and works well in combination with other fabric glues.

Dritz Fray Check

306191Dritz Fray Check is one of the most popular products used to seal hair wefts. This glue is excellent because it is clear and does not leave behind a sticky residue after drying. Considered by many to be the best weft sealer, this product is not specific for hair wefts and could be improved if it came in a darker color.

>>See Fray Check Amazon Discount<<

Nevertheless, even after coming in contact with water, the sealant continues to work well but the bond may weaken after multiple washes. It does not leave behind a harsh smell and keeps the hair wefts intact for a long time without the need to reseal.  From jeans, to couches, to fabric and hair wefts, it;s hard to go wrong with Fray Check.

Shed Stop Weft Sealer

THProducts_ShedStop-2Stop Shed Weft Sealer is a dark colored sealant that bonds quickly to the weft. The glue is thin and comes with an applicator tip that makes it easier to apply the glue to the weft. The weft still remain flexible after the application and does not leave behind a strong odor. The glue stops a significant amount of shedding but comes in a small bottle that may run out sooner than expected.

Easy Track Weft Sealer

weft_sealer_dark-3.4ozEasy Track Weft sealer is designed specifically for sealing virgin hair wefts. This sealant comes with an applicator brush and bonds the hair well. The product works well for removing nearly all the shedding. The downside to this sealer is that the smell can be very acidic and strong. It is often said to dry and leave a white residue after getting wet. The applicator brush makes this product a little difficult to apply and can leave an unwanted mess after application. Be sure to go slowly when using this product so as not to damage your hair.

Never Loose Weft Sealer

nl-clearNever Loose Weft Sealer is a quality weft sealer that dries very quickly and comes in both dark and clear formulas. The bottle is small and you will need more than one to complete all of your bundles depending on how much hair you are planning to seal. The product is very similar to Stop Shed Weft sealer and may even be from the same manufacturer. They share many of the same characteristics and drawbacks with the exception of the dark color formula.

Aleene’s Stop Fraying

Similar to Aleene’s Fabric Fusion, this fabric glue does a good job of sealing wefts and stopping unwanted shedding. This product will absolutely decrease the amount of shedding on your hair wefts but does not dry as well as some other products. It has a tendency to remain a little sticky and gluey after application. The adhesive bond may also begin to fade over time and will require reapplication to continue to prevent shedding.

How To Seal Wefts And Stop Shedding Fast

Sealing-2Wefts are the basis of beautiful hair extensions. Sealing your wefts is guaranteed to be the best way to prevent your hair from shedding. If your hair has been installed for a while, you may need to have your hair re-wefted professionally first. While it is nearly impossible to totally prevent shedding, sealing your wefts properly will dramatically reduce the amount of shedding that you might expect from your hair extensions. Before getting started, you will need to start with quality wefts that have a minimal amount of shedding out of the box.

Choose Double Wefted Hair

single vs doubleweftWhether you hair is single weft or double weft, may not make a major difference when it comes to shedding.  I recommend double wefted hair because it is thicker and I’ve notices that it may shed less due to the double sewing.  The most important factor is the quality of the sewing. The process of double wefting may take longer and the hair may be more expensive, but the reduced shedding will make the process of sealing your wefts even more effective.

Co-Wash You Hair Before Sealing

Co-washing means to wash and rinse your hair with a high quality conditioner only. This process cleans your hair and conditions it without damaging the hair. Co-washing is a quick and simple solution that will not keep your hair healthy fro root to end. Co-washing helps to retain the moisture in your hair eliminate dullness. You will want to seal only clean and healthy hair that is not brittle or dry at the weft. Wait for the hair to dry prior to sealing the wefts. If you plan to color or dye your hair, you will want to dye your hair prior to sealing and after co-washing but before sealing.

Sealing The Wefts

After Co-washing and drying your hair, it is time to seal the wefts. Choose a weft sealant that bonds quickly, is flexible and does not leave any clumpy residue.  Make sure to apply the sealant to both sides of the weft. This guarantees a tightly sealed weft that will minimize shedding dramatically.

Choosing The Sealant

There are some weft sealants that are made specifically for hair wefts and provide a good bond without leaving residue or a white crust along the weft. A very reasonable alternative to hair weft sealants are fabric glues. Fabric glues tend to be moisture proof and also dry clear. Some of the fabric glues do not dry clear but leave a white or gray film once dry. I recommend looking at the bottle to see if it dries clear.

Applying The Sealant

Place cloth or newspaper on a large flat surface such as a counter top or dinner table. Lay the extensions on the table. Try to use something sturdy to anchor the ends of the hair down to the surface so that your can clearly see the wefts and prevent bunching up as you apply the sealant.  Make sure to use a sealant that has a nozzle or an applicator brush. Apply the glue directly over the stitches of the weft. For a tighter seal, especially with double wefted hair, turn the weft upward and glue from the top covering both stitches at once.
Sealwefts
Try not to get any glue on the hair itself as this will cause clumping and can ruin the hair.  The sealant should be heavy enough to soak through the weft and seep in. If not, you will need to allow the glue to dry, then,  flip the hair over to seal the other side. You can also dab with your finger to allow the sealant to seep in more. Allow the sealant to dry and move on to the next bundle.
The process of sealing wefts is very simple and effective for maintaining your virgin hair for maximum possible time.

A Guide To Virgin Hair Care

Caring for your virgin hair investment should be your number 1 priority. Using this Virgin Hair Care Guide should make your extensions last at least one year!

Virgin Hair Care

One key aspect of caring for your weft extensions is the installation method. To ensure that your weft extensions do not shed after installation, we strongly recommend that you instruct your stylist to observe and follow these key points:

Sew in the wefts by looping and tying the weave thread under and over the weft in a blanket stitch method.

Do not put a needle through the wefts or pierce the wefts.

Do not split the wefts.
Avoid cutting the wefts. If you have to cut the wefts, seal each cut weft with an acrylic sealer.

Post Installation Maintenance

Once natural hair is cut from a donor’s head, it stops receiving much-needed nutriments that nourish and keeps the hair soft, shiny & tangle-free. It’s therefore vitally important to maintain and treat your natural hair extensions with the appropriate maintenance products that will restore/maintain its natural softness, silk and keep it tangle-free.

Proper maintenance care using the appropriate product range will ensure that your hair extensions keep its shine and lasts for a long time. We recommend you use mild shampoos & conditioners; preferably sulfate-free and silicon free hair care products.

Warning

Using the wrong maintenance products on your virgin hair extensions will result in dry, dull, tangled, damaged and unmanageable hair extensions!

Step 1: Detangle your hair

This is a very important step prior to shampooing your hair.

Ensure that your hair is free of tangles or snares. Using a wide tooth or a detangling brush, gently comb out your hair extensions. Always comb or brush hair from the bottom up, small sections at a time. The more careful you treat your extensions the longer they will last. Support your attachment when brushing or combing your hair.

Step 2: Shampoo/Condition

Shampoo your hair at least once a week. Shampoo your hair more often if you have increased perspiration or have been in a dusty environment. Curly textures require frequent shampoos or co-washes to look its best hair. Clean your hair extensions with a moisturizing shampoo.

Wash your hair in a downward motion, working shampoo from the top down in one motion. Condition your hair with a moisturizing conditioner. Follow with the conditioner in the same manner. If the hair feels dry or heavy it is time to shampoo

Condition-Wash: Substitute conditioner for shampoo. Wash your hair in a downward motion, working conditioner from the top down in one motion. Rinse well and then style. This is great for curly styles.

Step 3: Deep Condition

To keep you hair in tip- top shape, use a deep conditioner or hot oil treatment in your hair twice a month. More or less, depending on the hair’s need. This is very important if you have chemically treated the hair or use irons.

Step 4: Styling

As mentioned in step 1, always keep your virgin hair extensions tangle free. Brush or comb gently and avoid any excess tension. Always comb or brush hair from the bottom up, small sections at a time. The more careful you treat your extensions the longer they will last. Support your attachment when brushing or combing your hair. We also strongly recommend the use of a de-tangling brush to comb your hair extensions every day so that it does not develop tangles especially in the nape area.

Heat is your hair biggest enemy. The more you use on it, the shorter the life span of your hair. Use heat in moderation. Do not use high temperatures. High temperatures can damage the hair, including permanently altering the hair texture. Use styling products that are alcohol free.

At Night: Put your hair “up” at night. Braid or pin curl your hair before going to sleep. This is important in preventing tangles. Never sleep with loose wet hair, for it may tangle while you sleep.

Virgin Brazilian Hair Care

How To Care For Your Virgin Brazilian Hair

Moisturize virgin hair

Try to use a wide tooth comb on your. Many people use a brush, but I would recommend not brushing your hair too often because brushing has a tendency to be harsh on the hair and is more likely to pull it out.  With high quality Virgin Brazilian Hair, you can expect to have it last for up to 18 months if it is well maintained and taken care of.

If you begin to notice that the ends get dry, use Argan Oil Hair Treatment. Rub it in your hands and apply it to the ends of your hair.  Argan oil is native to Morocco and is sometimes referred to as Moroccan Oil. It is instantly absorbed into the hair, penetrating the roots and improving the  elasticity of dry hair. The strengthening properties of Vitamin E in Argan oil will prevent damage to your Virgin Brazilian hair.

After washing, you can use a deep conditioning product such as Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Moisturizing Hair Conditioner. Leave the conditioner in your hair for approximately 15-20 minutes. If you have wavy hair, I recommend getting the Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Curls & Waves Hair Conditioner if you want to keep the wavy look.

After showering make sure to blot dry your hair with a towel.   While your hair is still moist, apply John Frieda Frizz-Ease to your hair. Once this is completed, make sure you air dry your hair.  You can then style it as you wish. If you apply heat to your hair when styling it, make sure that you put some heat protectant spray to prevent damage. Virgin Brazilian hair is natural and can be very sensitive to heat, causing it to dry out and lose its naturally protective cuticle layer.  Be sure to wash your hair at least once a week and follow a deep conditioning process.

When you plan to go to bed, take a few minutes to braid your hair into one or two braids and wrap you hair with a silk scarf. This will keep the ends of the hair from fraying.  If you have Virgin Brazilian hair, it is always better to keep it in its natural state for as long as possible before you apply any harsh chemicals or dyes to it. I recommend not adding any dyes to harsh chemicals to your Virgin Brazilian Hair if you can avoid it. This will keep it looking soft, silky and healthy for the longest possible time.
